In a surprising act of friendship at the state medical and dental counselling on Monday, an aspiring medical student gave up her seat to her childhood friend.

Varshini S, a girl from Trichy gave up her seat under the quota for children of ex-servicemen for her childhood friend Janani N. Both the girls are from the same school, SRV Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Trichy.

Varshini told Times of India, “I secured a cut-off of 199 marks and I am from a backward community. I'm sure to clinch a seat in the general counselling. But it isn't the same for my friend. As a toast to our friendship, I want her to have this.”

Janani said that this gesture established the bond between both the families and friends. Both of them have been friends from kindergarten. “It was magnanimous of Varshini to let go of her seat,” Janani told TOI.

They had a difference of 0.25 marks but it was still difficult for Janani to secure a medical seat. She said that she owes her dream of becoming a doctor to her friend.

Even though it is difficult for Varshini to get a seat in Madras Medical College as there are many students in the range of 190-199, she said that she just wants a seat in any medical college, according to TOI.
