The Mamallapuram Police have launched a search for a share auto driver who allegedly molested a 29-year-old Finnish woman recently.

The woman had come to India two months ago and was volunteering with a non-government organisation, reported The New Indian Express.

The incident happened on September 8, 2017, when the woman was returning home from her office in Kelambakkam by a share-auto. Other passengers had got down from the share-auto and she was the only person in the auto.

A senior police officer told TNIE that the woman had called up her friend to wait at Mamallapuram to pick her up but the driver stopped the vehicle ahead of Mamallapuram and molested her.

However, the woman managed to escape from the share-auto and ran to her friend. Later, both of them filed a complaint with the Mamallapuram police.

Police told TNIE that the woman was staying with her friends in Mamallapuram.

The case is being investigated by police and they are checking all the CCTV footage in the area to nab the culprit.

The Mamallapuram police also added that women and couples are being targeted in that locality as it is a secluded area and they have increased patrolling to ensure safety.

In April, a 24-year-old German woman was raped by unidentified men in Mamallapuram in broad daylight. She was part of a group of tourists visiting the country.

The tourist was walking alone by a casuarina grove near the resort, when the crime occurred.

Police claimed that the rape survivor could not provide any clarity on who the attackers were.
