The four Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu viz. Aravakuruchi, Sulur, Thiruparankundram and Ottapidaram, that had their bye-elections on Sunday recorded an average voter turnout of 77.62%. While Aravakurichi recorded the highest voter turnout of 84.28%, Sulur came second with 79.41%.

In Thiruparankundram, the voter turnout was 74.17% followed by Ottapidaram with 72.61%. Aruvakuruchi has 2.05 lakh voters, Ottapidaram has 2.33 lakh, Thiruparankundram 3.04 lakh and Sulur has 2.95 lakh voters.

May 19 also saw re-polling in 13 booths in Erode, Dharmapuri, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore Lok Sabha constituencies. All booths saw an average voter turnout of 84.13%.

While Booth 195 from Pappireddipatti in Dharmapuri parliamentary constituency, recorded highest voter turnout with 92.11%, the lowest was at Periyakulam booth with 63.91%. In Pappireddipatti, DMK’s Lok Sabha candidate S Senthilkumar had complained to the EC alleging that booth agents of the PMK had cast multiple votes.

While Poonamallee registered 82.6% voter turnout, from Pappireddipatti, booths 181 and 182 of Ayyampatti saw 87.66% and 89.62% respectively. In the three other Nathamedu booths of Pappireddipatti - 192, 193 and 194 - voter turnout was registered at 90.46%, 89.36% and 90.92% respectively. In Pappireddipatti’s two Jallipudur booths - 196 and 197 - the voter turnout was 89.37% and 89.73% respectively.

Booth 210 in Panrutti recorded 66.51% turnout while the one in Kangeyam saw 81.74%. The one from Andipetti saw 79.76% voter turnout on Sunday.

Re-polling in these 13 booths was announced nearly three weeks after Lok Sabha elections on April 18.

Bye-elections for 18 Assembly constituencies in the state were held on April 18 along with the Lok Sabha polls. The results of the bye-polls for 22 assembly constituencies are crucial for the ruling AIADMK, opposition DMK and AMMK parties. According to analysts, the AIADMK may not find it difficult to win eight seats out of the 22 to continue to stay in power.
