A gang of four is reported to have brutally attacked and killed a known history-sheeter and president of the BJP’s youth wing in Villupuram on Tuesday when he was returning from the court after appearing in a criminal case against him, reports The New Indian Express.

Thirty-two-year-old Janarthanan, aka Jana, had joined the party recently and also filed nominations for the local body elections. As he was returning from the court with two friends, a gang hurled petrol bombs at them. An injured Jana was then hacked to death by the gang.

While one of his friends was also injured in the attack, the other person escaped without any major injuries and has been detained for questioning by the police.

Jana lived in Kuliyapalayam village near Auroville in Puducherry and there are 30 cases against him in Puducherry and Villupruam, reports TNIE.

Jana’s death comes following a series of murders and attacks among various gang leaders in that area.

While Jana’s death is believed to have been related to the gang wars, there have been several attacks on leaders of Hindu right-wing groups and parties in Tamil Nadu recently.

An RSS member, R Narahari, was waylaid and attacked by a gang in Chennai on Tuesday.

Last month, Coimbatore erupted in fury and witnessed communal violence after a member of the Hindu Munnani was hacked to death by unknown assailants.
