Image source: Mammootty/Facebook Three people were killed and 14 others injured when the roof of a church collapsed in Palayamkottai, Tamil Nadu. The three who died were construction workers at the church, and their bodies have been recovered from the debris. Nine persons have been rescued and have been admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical college hospital where their injuries are being treated.St. Peter’s Church is located on Church Street, Xavier colony, near the Tirunelveli New Bus Stand. New floors were being added to the building a year after the ground floor of the church had been constructed, reported The New Indian Express. On Wednesday, the structure suddenly caved in when the concrete-laying work was going on. The fire brigades, police and various volunteers rushed to the spot and began rescue operations immediately. Collector M Karunakaran, RDO Fermi Vidhya, Deputy Police Commissioner T P Suresh Kumar and other officials immediately arrived at the spot to oversee the rescue operations.Deputy Iinspector of Police Murugan addressed the press shortly after the incident. “The bodies of the three people have been recovered along with their details. The corporation will clean up in the morning. There is no chance of anyone else being there. But even if there isn’t, we will conduct another round of thorough searches for our own satisfaction,” he said, reported Puthiya Thalamurai.No arrests have been made but an FIR under section 304 (culpable crime not amounting to homicide), Section 336 (endangering life and safety of others) , Section 337 and Section 338 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.
