Thala Ajith will skip star cricket tournament, says actors should pay for own Sangam building

Tamil actor Ajith Kumar isn’t one for pomp and show. In recent times, Ajith has even refused to appear in any film-related events, including promotions for his films or audio launches.

And now he’s extending that policy to the Nadigar Sangam’s star cricket tournament as well.

The South Indian Film Artistes' Association's cricket tournament is being held in Chennai on April 17 to raise funds for a new building for the Sangam. While megastars Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Chiranjeevi are likely to attend the event, Rajinikanth will bowl the first ball.

Sources say Ajith has turned down requests to attend, and has even told actors that they shouldn’t seek financial support from the public for the construction of the building. Instead, the actors themselves should handle it.

But there is some lack of clarity on his view on the matter, since some soures have subsequently denied that Ajith made this statement.

This is not the first time that the actor has been absent from Nadigar Sangam events. He had previously given a miss to the fund-raising show which was held in Singapore. He had previously donated Rs 10 lakh during Vijayakanth’s tenure as secretary when the Nadigar Sangam was on a mission to repay a loan.

In 2010, Ajith also openly appealed to the then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to ensure that actors aren’t forced to attend political functions.
