In a flurry of events which began on Sunday morning, Tamil Nadu’s leader of Opposition and DMDK leader, Vijayakanth, made a series of high-profile visits, meeting top leaders of opposition parties in the state. A day that began with Vijayakanth meeting DMK supremo M Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence, the visit was followed up by a visit to the TN Congress office where he interacted with Congress leader EVKS Elangovan. The meeting with Karunanidhi involved discussions on the Cauvery dam, the recent Andhra Pradesh forest encounter, the perennial issues faced by Indian fishermen at the hands of Sri Lanka, the Land Acquisition Bill, the farmer’s plight as well as the Mullaperiyar case. Accusing the Tamil Nadu CM O Panneerselvam of being deceitful, he asserted that it was wrong that the ruling AIADMK government had sidelined the remaining parties and met PM Modi alone. On April 25, O Panneerselvam met PM Modi and urged him to intervene and advise the Karnataka government against the construction of an illegal reservoir at Mekedatu. However, the meeting itself is reportedly said to have occurred after the DMDK and PMK urged CM Pannerselvam to lead an all-party leaders delegation to call on PM Modi over the Mekedatu issue – the construction of a dan to be built across the Cauvery. “A resolution must be passed in that meeting about the issue and the Chief Minister should lead an all-party delegation with all political party leaders and meet the Prime Minister and present the demands of Tamil Nadu,” said PMK leader, DR. S Ramadoss. Will a collective force weaken the elusive AIADMK? After the political visits, Vijayakanth told reporters that a delegation consisting representatives from all opposition parties in the state would be meeting the PM on Monday. A political scene gathering dust for a while, this sudden move by Vijayakanth forming a powerful anti-AIADMK group is expected to ruffle up a few feathers at the AIADMK. A government that has been presumed and labelled weak considering Jayalalaithaa’s absence at the helm of affairs, it appear as if Vijayakanth has struck hard and fast against the AIADMK government – and where it would hurt most. DMK leader, M Karunanidhi While the 2016 Assembly elections loom large in the background, it will be a wait-and-watch to find out if the proposition of a combined opposition would be able to work its magic in defeating the AIADMK. A rainbow alliance? Though there are murmurs of a grand alliance, it is doubtful if the DMKs Karunanidhi and Stalin would be comfortable with an alliance lead by Vijayakanth as the father - son duo would prefer to hold the reins.
