A political group based in Tamil Nadu has approached the Madras High Court to get permission to celebrate the birth anniversary of the monarch Tipu Sultan.
According to the writ petition filed by Ismail, state deputy general secretary of Thamilaga Makkal Jananayaga Katchi, the Gudiyatham police refused to give permission to organize an event at Suthur Gate in Aliar Street, Gudiatham on November 20.
He told The Times of India, “Tipu Sultan was a great freedom fighter and he had fought many wars against the British to get freedom for our country. But, some communal organisations are speaking ill of him only because he was a Muslim.”
He also said that history text books have many references to his patriotism for the country and his freedom struggle.
A Sirajudeen, Ismail's counel said that the police had rejected their plea to avoid any kind of similar problems in Tamil Nadu as in Bengaluru.
The party said in his petition, “I submit that the exercise of one's fundamental right cannot be at the mercy of communal elements. If any breach of peace is anticipated by law enforcement agencies, police should register a case and take action against those elements. But, that cannot be a ground for refusing my right.”
