A day after a speeding car ran amok in Hyderabad's Langer Houz area and killed a policeman, the police arrested a 21-year-old student, Mohammed Abdul Shoaib for the crime on Tuesday.

The incident happened between 5.30am and 6am when SI Krishnaiah was going for a morning walk near Tippu khan bridge.

The speeding car lost control, and rammed into Krishnaiah, following which he was shifted to the Osmania General Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

The accused fled from the scene after the accident.

However, the police said that a few locals managed to note down the registration vehicle of the number.

After examining CCTV footage, and tracking the registration number, the police zeroed in on one Khaleel, who owned the car.

“When contacted, Khaleel told us that his nephew Mohammed Abdul Shoaib took out the car on Monday morning," Langar Houz inspector C Anjaiah told TOI.

When the police picked up Shoaib, he confessed to the crime, claiming that he was driving fast because his aunt was sick.

Shoaib is a resident of Musheerabad and is pursuing B Pharmacy at a college in the city.

The Deccan Chronicle reported that the police are investigating his claims, but could not ascertain if he was drunk at the time of the accident, as he was arrested after more than 24 hours.

SI Krishnaiah was mowed down on his anniversary, and was reportedly due to retire from service soon.
