Tamil filmmaker, Soundarya, the second daughter of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth filed for divorce at a family court in Chennai on Friday, choosing to end her six-year marriage to Ashwin Ramkumar, an industrialist.

Reports suggest that ‘irreconcilable differences’ was stated as the reason for divorce. Both Soundarya and Ashwin were present in court.

Soundarya had in September confirmed rumours of the couple’s separation, writing on her Twitter page, “"News about my marriage is true. We have been separated for over a year and divorce talks are on. I request all to respect my family's privacy."

Soundarya and Ashwin got married in Chennai in 2010 and have a one-year-old son.

A graphic designer by profession, Soundarya has worked in Tamil films such as "Baba", "Sandakozhi" and "Sivaji" among others.

She is also the founder of Ocher Picture Productions.

In her debut film, Soundarya directed her father in India's first motion capture 3D Tamil film "Kochadaiiyaan". She had also produced Venkat Prabhu-directed 2010 Tamil comedy "Goa".

Soundarya is presently working with her brother-in-law Dhanush in “Velaiilla Pattadhari 2”. The film also stars Amala Paul, and Bollywood actor Kajol, who will make her comeback in Tamil films after 20 years.  It is a sequel to the 2014 blockbuster hit of the same name.
