A huge traffic jam was caused by protesting taxi drivers, on the national highway connecting Kempegowda International Airport, on Tuesday morning. Many commuters, including air passengers were delayed due to the snap protest.

The protest was in response to a rumour about an enforcement drive being conducted by a Regional Transport Office official, who allegedly stopped vehicles belonging to Ola and Uber, reported The Times of India.

Drivers staged a protest at the Devanahalli toll plaza and there was a traffic block stretching to several kilometres from the toll plaza.

Joint commissioner Narendra Holkar said airport authorities had complained to the transport department that certain taxi drivers were parking vehicles haphazardly, blocking roads in the premises.

“Following the complaints, a few officials went to inspect. While checking vehicles which were parked on the road, some drivers got agitated as they assumed that our officials were carrying out drives to book cases against them. As the wrong message went viral among drivers, they just stopped taxis on the road, blocking the busy road. The police had to interfere and clear the traffic,” Holkar said.

In May, the Karnataka government had made it mandatory for vehicle owners of Ola and Uber to procure a license under Karnataka On-Demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rules 2016.

But the two taxi aggregators have not implemented the order so far and have requested for an extension.

DCP of traffic (north) Renuka said that a case has been registered against the drivers for blocking traffic on the busy road.

After the incident, taxi drivers assembled near Freedom Park and continued their protest.
