It’s been over 24 hours since noted singer and violinist Balabhaskar and his wife, Lakshmi, met with an accident, but the star is still battling for his life. Officials at the Ananthapuri Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where the couple were rushed to following the accident, told TNM on Wednesday that both Balabhaskar and his wife continue to be on life support.

Speaking to TNM, Dr Marthandan Pillai of the Neurology Department at the Ananthapuri Hospital said that the Balabhaskar’s condition continues to be critical as of Wednesday evening as well. “We are able to maintain the condition of his blood pressure and his respiration at a stable level,” said Dr Marthandan Pillai.

Talking about the condition of Lakshmi, the singer's wife, the doctor said that even though she’s also on life support, her condition is improving.

The singer-musician and his family met with an accident at Pallipuram, near his hometown of Thiruvananthapuram, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The couple and their two-year-old daughter, Tejasvini were on their way back from a temple trip in Thrissur when the car crashed into a tree.

While the couple was rushed to a nearby hospital, Tejasvini, sadly could not be saved.

Their driver, Arjun, too is reported to have sustained minor injuries. As per the Mangalapuram police, it was suspected that the driver may have dozed off on the way back, causing him to ram into the tree.

On Tuesday, Dr Marthandan Pillai had said that Balabhaskar had sustained multiple organ failure and also said that there were fractures in his legs. “His neck was dislocated and, in order to correct this, we performed a surgery. He has been put on ventilator support as his lungs are severely damaged,” the doctor told TNM.

Balabhaskar is a noted musician who began his career at the mere age of 12. He composed the soundtrack for the Malayalam film Mangalya Pallak, and is the youngest music composer to have worked in the industry. He is well-known for his unique south Indian fusion music.

The news of the accident sent shockwaves across the state and many of his fans and well wishers took to Facebook to wish the couple a speedy recovery. Some of them shared videos of their favourite performances by the young artist along with a message saying that they will keep the couple in their prayers.
