Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday condemned the visit of former President and Congress veteran, Pranab Mukherjee to the RSS headquarters at Nagpur.

Also condemning Pranab Mukherjee’s praise of RSS founder, Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the Kerala CM in his Facebook post said, “The former President’s actions have come as a shock to all nationalists who keep the principles of secularism close to their heart.”

“As the former President of a nation which has the word secularism written in the preamble of the Constitution, it was shocking to hear him shower praise on a person who has established a communal discord and religious hatred movement,” said Pinarayi Vijayan in his Facebook post.

“The former President went to greet the parade of those who had completed 3 years of RSS trainings rather than participating in any program on democracy," Vijayan said adding that it should have been avoided.

Vijayan also went on to add that along with the visit, the former President’s message on the visitor’s book at the RSS headquarters seems like an attempt to reconcile with the Sangh Parivar which continues to engage in inhuman acts.

The stand of Pranab Mukherjee that "dented the image of the post of president" could be seen only as a political move and so it is condemnable, Vijayan said.

Mukherjee's decision to attend the RSS event has already created a major political conflict with several Congress leaders criticising his decision.

Mukherjee on Thursday described Hedgewar as a ‘great son of Mother India' as he visited the birthplace of the RSS chief in Nagpur.

"Today I came here to pay my respect and homage to a great son of Mother India," Mukherjee wrote in a visitor's book at Hedgewar's birthplace.

Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to the RSS headquarters drew criticism from different corners of the political space. Earlier on Thursday, prior to the visit, Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha had also voiced out her displeasure on Twitter regarding her father visiting the RSS headquarters.
