On Sunday, seven people died in different parts of Tamil Nadu, during the bull taming sport of jallikattu.
Three spectators died during `eruthu vidum vizha', a variant of jallikattu in Krishangiri district, two died in Vellore district and two more died in separate incidents in Madurai district, reported The Times of India.
In Krishnagiri district, two people died after they were knocked down by the bulls and one more died due to suffocation. A man was allegedly drunk and fell down when the crowd rushed to avoid a bull and died due to suffocation. A 60-year-old man at Bargur in Vellore district died after being knocked down by a bull. He had severe head injuries.
In a similar incident at Bargur, a 34-year-old man’s leg got stuck in a rope tied to a bull and he was pulled down. He too faced head injuries and died on the way to the hospital.
The Times of India reported that the organizers did not follow the rules for the sport. The events did not have barricades, separating the spectators from the bulls.
Meanwhile, a teenager in Sivaganga died during the ‘manjuvirattu’ event. Sarathkumar, (19), was participating in the sport and was gored by the bull. He was given first aid but died on the way to the Sivaganga Medical College Hospital. A 52-year-old man, Anthonysamy, died, when he was gored by one of the bulls, during rekla race in Thoothukudi on Sunday.
