As rains continue to lash parts of Tamil Nadu over the weekend, schools and colleges in a few districts will remain shut on Monday as per an order from the district collectors.
Northeast monsoon arrived in Tamil Nadu a few days ago, bringing heavy showers with it across the state. The rains have been widespread so far, disrupting the normal lives of the people living in the state. The incessant rains have forced the district collectors of Coimbatore and Kanyakumari to declare holidays for all the schools and colleges on Monday. In Sivaganga district, the district collector has declared holiday only for schools due to the rain. In Chennai, the district collector has stated that the schools and colleges will function normally on Monday.
Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and a few places in Chennai district recorded massive rainfall on Sunday, as per data posted by independent weather blogger Pradeep John. Kuzhithurai in Kanyakumari district recorded the highest amount of rainfall, recording 140 mm in a span of 24 hours. Suralode and Mylaudy in Kanyakumari district recorded 83mm and 67mm of rainfall, respectively, on Sunday.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department forecast published on Saturday, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over isolated places in Tamil Nadu on Monday and Tuesday. The IMD also stated that Chennai recorded 100% humidity on Sunday morning and the temperature stood at 26.2°C. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over the state for the next two days along with thunderstorm with lightning warnings for some places that may extend up to October 25, according to the RMC. Weather bloggers have also predicted an increase in the rainfall in Chennai from Tuesday as a ‘low’ or a ‘trough of low’ is expected to intensify in the Bay of Bengal, prompting heavy downpour over the city.
