Hyderabad-born tennis ace Sania Mirza has retained her position at the world’s top doubles player in the World Tennis Association (WTA) rankings list this week.

Sania, whose professional career spans 13 years years, took to Twitter to express her excitement, saying:

After a wrist injury that forced her to retire from singles career, Sania has been concentrating on the doubles circuit. She claimed the trophy for the WTA finals in 2014, along with partner Cara Black and defended the title with Martina Hingis the following year. Sania also partnered with Hingis to win the Volvo Car Open in Charleston last season, making her the first Indian woman to hold the ranking.

Since her split with Hingis this summer, Sania has fought her tooth and nail to retain the No.1 position. In their first match as opponents at the Western and Southern Open, Sania partnered with Barbora Strycoya to defeat Hingis and her partner, ensuring that the ranking remained safe and sound with her.

Wishes from enthusiastic fans and celebrities alike poured in on Twitter, with many like Mohandas Menon, Trisha Krishnan and Ajum Chopra sending in congratulatory messages.
