The Civil Aviation Ministry, on Wednesday, received a request to rename the Cochin International airport after Adi Shankara, the religious philosopher of 8th century.

According to reports, the appeal has been put forth by Navodayam, an NGO founded by senior RSS member P Parmeshvar, and Faith foundation.

In a joint appeal, the two organizations have also requested the minister of state for civil aviation, Mahesh Sharma, to develop Adi Shankara Tourist Circuit in India and Nepal.

Reports also suggests that following a proposal by Navodayam, the government is considering celebrating May 11 as National Philosopher’s Day, to mark the birth anniversary of Adi Shankara, who is hailed as ‘Jagadguru’.

The NGO also demanded that Adi Shankara’s philosophy should be included in the curriculum of educational institutions to ‘strengthen the notion of Rashtra Bharat’.
