What started out as an attempt to arrest perpetrators of rape who filmed their act and spread it on social media has turned into a story that spans many states of the country. On Thursday, the CBI arrested an accused in a case from Bengaluru, for the uploading of rape videos on social networking sites. The video which was traced to Kaushik was exposed by activist Sunitha Krishnan, founder of the anti-trafficking NGO Prajwala, showed a man wearing a red t-shirt rape a woman, while another man was recording the act. The rapist who is seen smiling all through the act, was identified as Happy Singh from Sitapur in Uttar Pradeh, and has already been arrested. "K. Kaushik was arrested here as digital evidence exhibits used in uploading the video clips on the internet was discovered and recovered from his possession," a CBI spokesperson said. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said its officers raided Kaushik's residence in the city after tracing the IP address to the city from which the rape clips were uploaded. The CBI is yet to establish if Happy Singh and Kaushik even know each other and how Kaushik got his hands on the video. A report in the Hindustan Times also adds that the CBI also seized 500 sex-crime clips from him. Kaushik allegedly earned a lot of money from ‘hits’ received by these videos that he uploaded on porn sites. "The act was committed in UP around four years ago, but the video was uploaded from Bengaluru. This is a significant break through as this is the first time that someone who has uploaded such content has been arrested," Sunitha Krishnan told TNM. "We have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 67A of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000 on the Supreme Court's directive at Kotwali police station in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh,"  the CBI spokesperson added. Kaushik will be produced in a court on Friday for judicial custody and interrogation as part of the investigation into the case. Sources also say that the CBI is likely to announce another arrest of a brutal rape video, this one in a moving car. Though details are yet to come out, it has been learnt that the accused in the video are from Madhya Pradesh. The apex court on February 27 had ordered a CBI inquiry into two rape cases flagged by Sunitha Krishnan. Taking a strong view against circulation of sexual violence videos on messaging services like Whatsapp and hosting them on social networking sites, the special social justice bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Jutice U.U. Lalit took suo motu cognizance of a letter Sunitha wrote. The CBI had on March 23, arrested Kalia Sahoo alias Subrat Sahoo who was part of one of the videos from Bhubaneswar.
