Bengaluru police on Saturday claimed that they have solved the sensational Bannerghatta forest arm chopping case mystery. In a bizarre incident on September 11, three unidentified men chopped off and fled with the forearm of a 27-year-old man, at around 6 pm, without any apparent motive. Jayalakshmi, who was apparently in a relationship with the victim, Raveesh, was present with him at the time of the incident.

Now, the police claim that Jayalakshmi, a constable with VV Puram Traffic Police Station in the city, is the conspirator in the case. Initially, the police had suspected foul business dealings of Raveesh, who works as an electrical contractor, or his relationship with Jayalakshmi as the motive behind the incident. Police also claim that investigations have now revealed it was a ploy by Jayalakshmi to teach Raveesh, a resident of Anekal, a ‘lesson’.

Speaking about the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Bengaluru Rural) SK Umesh said, “It was a bizarre case. We were told that unidentified men intercepted a couple in the forest area off Lakshmi Narasimha Temple in Bannerghatta near Anekal on September 11 evening, cut the man’s forearm and fled with it. Cracking the case was a big challenge as the motive behind it and the miscreants were not known.”

Incidentally, videos shot by passersby show Jayalakshmi crying for help when the incident occurred, which made it hard to connect the dots, said police.

However, inconsistent statements made by Jayalakshmi helped the investigators. Besides, on scanning her phone call records, the police found that she was in touch with a known miscreant, Mental Vijji.

Based on this, further interrogations revealed that Jayalakshmi and Raveesh were in a relationship in the past but she married another man as they belonged to different castes. On learning that she was considering a divorce, Raveesh had apparently started pursuing Jayalakshmi again.

According to the police, Jayalakshmi wanted to marry Raveesh, but he did not want to get married, which led to the incident.

Jayalakshmi then decided to hire habitual offender, Kumar for carrying out the attack. Police on Saturday had to open fire to arrest one of the other accused Shravanakumar alias Mental Vijji, who is also a habitual offender. Kumar’s son Anand, who was also involved in the incident, had hired Shravanakumar to help with this attack.

Police say that Jayalakshmi thought once Raveesh lost his arm, he would have no other option than to marry her. Investigations also revealed that Jayalakshmi had paid Rs 15,000 out of the total Rs 1.5 lakh as the advance amount.

Shravanakumar was arrested up by police on Saturday morning and found the severed limb after taking him to the crime spot. When he tried to escape by strangling constable Siddalingaswamy, the Deputy SP had to shoot him on his foot. Other miscreants involved in the crime were arrested.

Meanwhile, Raveesh is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
