On Tuesday, Home Minister K.J. George told The Hindu that the government is considering handing over the investigation of the rape complaint filed against Ramachandrapura mutt seer Raghaveshwara Bharati Swami to the CID. The complaint was filed by a 24-year old Yakshagana artiste.

The 24-year-old woman who filed the complaint at Girinagar Police Station on Saturday said that the seer had 'married' her against her wish in 2006, when she was studying in the mutt's school. The Home Minister told the reporter that the CID was already looking into a similar case against the seer, so it would would be better if they take up the case. The government will not succumb to any pressure with respect to the investigation, he added.

Around the same time last year, two complaints were lodged against the seer which the police investigated. A case of sexual assault filed by the daughter of singer Premalatha Divakar against the seer and a complaint relating to blackmail were handed over to the CID. In a relief to Sri Ramachandrapura Mutt pontiff, the Karnataka High Court in 2014 had directed the State police not to arrest the seer until further orders
