Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday assured Fatima Nafees that the police are doing everything possible to locate her missing son, Jawaharlal Nehru University student Najeeb Ahmed, an informed source said.

The minister also told her that he calls regular updates on the matter from the Delhi Police.

"The Home Minister heard her patiently and assured her that the city police are on it," the source told IANS.

Interacting with the media after meeting Rajnath, Fatima said the minister has given her full assurance and that she is hopeful of her son returning safely.

She denied reports that he was unwell on the day of his disappearance.

"I spoke to him at 11.00 p.m., he wasn't depressed. He was waiting for me, he had called me up. He did not go anywhere on his own. He has been kidnapped...I am sure about it," she said.

Najeeb's sister Sadaf also rubbished allegations that he was mentally unstable.

"He had cracked university exams, he is a studious child. Do you think a person studying at such a prestigious institution can be mentally unstable? I request (all)...please don't defame him. He had sleeping problems that children who are studying often have due to pressure. He had no other problem," she told the media persons.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung said Delhi Police are doing their best to find the missing student and made an appeal not to politicise the issue.

Jung told TV channel Times Now that several teams have been sent out to trace Najeeb.

"Najeeb was depressed and was undergoing treatment. Police have been looking everywhere for him but haven't found him so far," Jung said.

He added that the police have thoroughly searched the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, hospitals and many 'dargahs' to find Najeeb.

Najeeb, 27-year-old M.Sc. first-year student of the prestigious JNU, went missing from the university hostel on October 15, allegedly after an altercation with the members of RSS's students wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

The ABVP has, however, denied any involvement in his disappearance.
