Vijay’s Mersal is having a dream run at the box-office, despite being caught in controversies after GST-related dialogues in the film earned the wrath of the Modi-led government. On Sunday night, after being heavily criticised by filmmaker-politician Seeman for not voicing his opinion on the Mersal issue, superstar Rajinikanth tweeted in support of the film. He wrote, “Important topic addressed. Well done! Congratulations team Mersal.”

Over the last few months, the Superstar has given several indications of his desire to take the political plunge. On May 19, he had said, “We will come back when it’s time for war.”
People close to the actor have earlier told TNM that Rajinikanth will definitely enter politics and will be a part of the political landscape in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Made on a whopping budget of Rs. 130 crore, the film has to do business of over Rs. 200 crore to break even. The controversy has only earned the film more attention and this could mean more footfalls. The Telugu dubbed version of the film, which also stars Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Nithya Menen and SJ Suryah, is slated for release this week.
In its opening weekend worldwide, Mersal has grossed over Rs. 100 crore and it’s going very strong everywhere. In several international key areas, the film has already surpassed the lifetime earnings of Theri, the last outing in the combination of Vijay and Atlee.
