Superstar Rajinikanth was all praise for actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, who launched his political party – Makkal Needhi Maiam on February 21.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai on Friday, Rajinikanth, whose political plans are also underway, said, “The way Kamal Haasan launched his party was outstanding. I watched it fully. His party flag and principles are also good. I congratulated him when he came to meet me. Now I want to congratulate him once again for his successful first public meet.”

Rajini noted, “For the good of the people, different people are travelling in different paths, but the destination is all the same: to do good for the people."” Sharing his thoughts on Makkal Needhi Maiam, he said, “Definitely I think it will be good. Definitely Kamal is very talented. I think they will take it forward well. They have to earn the trust of the people and I think they will do that.”

When asked about the all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami on Thursday on the Cauvery issue, Rajini told the media that it was a good move. The Tamil actor, who hails from Karnataka, was earlier slammed by Kannadiga outfits for expressing disappointment regarding the Supreme Court’s verdict, reducing the amount of Cauvery water Karnataka has to release to Tamil Nadu.

The superstar had earlier on Friday addressed Rajini Mandram office bearers at the recruitment drive for district secretaries in Chennai’s Raghavendra Mandapam. Rajini is currently engaged in building an organisational structure for his party. Addressing his fans on the need for this, he said, “For us, the organisation structure is important. The foundation must be strong. We initially planned to meet fans from all districts together, but that will take a few days. Also, when that happens, it will be difficult to have a face to face conversation about things. All parties in Tamil Nadu, whether big or small, have a vote bank in TN because they have an organisation structure, a strong base. We need to do that as well. Let people say whatever they want.”

On Sunday, Kamal Haasan had visited Rajini at his residence in Poes Garden on Sunday before he unveiled his political party. At the time, Kamal had termed his meeting with Rajini a courtesy call, even amidst speculation that the two stars could come together in a political alliance. Both Kamal and Rajini were, however, quick to play down the meeting.  "My style and his are different even in movies.," said Rajini on Sunday, while Kamal had answered, “Only time will tell about us joining hands. The opportunity might come to meet national leaders in the future.”

Following his party launch, Kamal had on Thursday written in his column in the Tamil weekly Ananda Vikatan about the respect the duo shared. Alluding to earlier meetings between the two, he said, “We spoke about dignity and that even if we were to stand on the opposite sides, respect for each other should always be there. Rajini too agreed for the war ethics I sought.”

In December last year, Rajinikanth had announced his entry into the political arena. He had then stated, “Devoid of caste, a spiritual governance, spiritual politics, honesty and transparency. That's my goal.”
