The contentious matrimonial advertisement put out by the mother of gay rights activist Harish Iyer has received close to 150 responses, including some hate mail. According to a report in the Bangalore Mirror, responses have come in from the US, England, Australia and Saudi Arabia. The advertisement had become the centre of much public debate with some appreciating it for breaking boundaries. While some were critical of it since homosexuality is banned in the country, others took offense to the “Iyer preferred” requirement in the ad. Read: When caste played a role in a path-breaking Indian gay matrimonial ad The advertisement also courted controversy after three newspapers refused to publish it before the Mid-Day carried it. “I am going through the offers that I have received from across the world, including Indian cities, and I will take my own time to finalise a proposal,” Iyer was quoted by the PTI as saying. He mentioned that the hate mail accuse him of destroying family institutions but added that he does not take them seriously.
