A 30-year-old woman police constable committed suicide on Friday in Tirupur after allegedly being tortured by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

Constable Gayathri had been transferred from her hometown of Vadamurai in Dindigul to Dharapuram in Tirupur last week.

Her family members allege that she was tortured by DSP Regina Begum for a week. Her husband, Armugam alleged that she had been scolded and abused by the DSP for not bringing water on time for officials at the Tirupur Collectorate.

She reportedly fainted at the All Women’s Police Station in Dharapuram after consuming poison at 9pm on Friday night. Although her colleagues rushed her to the Tirupur Government Hospital, Gayathri had to be shifted to Coimbatore Government Hospital. She died on the way to the hospital.

The body has been sent for post-mortem to the Coimbatore Government Hospital. Her mother Parvathy told reporters, “I want justice for my daughter and want the DSP to be suspended immediately.”

Reportedly, she was also asked by her senior to do some domestic chores, police said.
