On Wednesday, a PIL was filed at the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court asking the Centre and state government to nationalise the assets of the former Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa and urging the court to appoint a retired High Court judge to administer the properties.
The petition was filed by Tamil Nadu Centre for Public Interest Litigation. The petitioner stated that since she does not have a legal heir, she always used to say in meetings, “by the people for the people,” reported The Hindu.
The petitioner stated that all the properties should be taken by the state government and all the revenue from it should be used for people’s welfare. The petitioner also listed all the properties of Jayalalithaa along with the petition.
However, the case will be coming up for hearing on Thursday before the division bench.
NGO’s managing trustee KK Ramesh had made a representation to the Centre and the State governments on December 15 asking for the total value of the properties owned by Jayalalithaa and also to appoint a commission headed by retired High Court judge.
In November 2016, a retired judge, Justice D Hariparanthaman was appointed as the administrator of the properties of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran. In MGR’s will, registered on January 18, 1987, MGR had appointed senior advocate N.C. Ragavachari (since deceased) as its executor. He had named a relative M. Rajendran to succeed Ragavachari after the latter’s lifetime.
