The Peddapuram police in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district on Saturday said that it had foiled a conspiracy that attempted to murder the town's Municipal chairman, Raja Suribabu Raju.

Stating that they had arrested three people who were allegedly going to carry out the assassination, Peddapuram Inspector Srinivas told reporters in the town that the case pertained to ownership of a certain parcel of land.

According to media reports, Rongala Satyanarayana alias Sathibabu, who was a rowdy sheeter and land grabber, had trespassed and wanted to grab 500 sq.yards of a vacant plot, which he reportedly registered with fake documents.

However, as the original owners of the land approached the Municipal Chairman, he ensured that the land was returned to them.

The police said that the rowdy sheeter even offered the municipal chief a 'settlement' which he refused to take, following which a plan was hatched to eliminate him.

Sathibabu then contacted members of a 'supari gang', three of whom were identified and detained by the police when they were staying at a hotel in the town.

This is not the first such attempt busted by the district police.

In March this year, the East Godavari police said that they arrested two former students of University of Hyderabad (UoH) and foiled a plot to kill varsity Vice-Chancellor Podile Apparao.

The police said that the accused were arrested at Pitchukalapadu Junction on the Bhadrachalam-Cherla Road and added that they were on their way to allegedly execute the assassination on the directions of top CPI(Maoist) leaders Haribhushan alias Yapa Narayana, who is the Telangana State Committee Secretary, and Chandranna, a Central Committee Member.

Speaking to TNM at the time, Superintendent of Police, East Godavari, Vishal Gunni, said, “The duo has been booked under Section 120b (Criminal Conspiracy) and relevant sections of the Arms Act. They have been sent to judicial remand.”
