The boat apparently belongs to Laxmi Venkateshwara boat services and the owner Khaja Mohinuddeen has surrendered at the Devipatnam police station following the incident, ETV reported.

A sudden whirlwind is said to be the reason behind the mishap.

Local media reports suggest that the passenger boat started from Devipatnam and was en route to Vadapalli.

Villagers from Manturu who reached the spot after hearing about the incident took up rescue operations with the help of country boats. Police also joined in the rescue operations.

TNM was unable to reach Rampachodavaram ASP and CI, and Devipatnam Sub- Inspector for updates.

Four days ago, a tourist boat with 120 passengers caught fire and went up in flames in the same region due to a suspected short circuit. However, the passengers had a lucky escape and there were no casualties in the accident.
