Two men were arrested on Monday on the charge of peddling drugs online, Delhi Police Crime Branch said. Furthermore, the payment was being made through bitcoins.

A total of 62 gm ecstasy, a psychotropic substance, was seized from Kamal Kalra and Mahesh Goyal, Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Deo said.

The drug was meant for sale at rave parties in Delhi and Noida.

After a tip-off about a gang involved in the supply of party drugs, police arrested Kamal on October 29 from Sector 13 in Rohini and seized 42 gm contraband from him.

Kamal told police he had procured the contraband from someone whom he was in connect with, on phone.

Police zeroed in on Mahesh Goyal by analysing Kamal's call details and arrested him from Dwarka with 20 gm of the drug.

Mahesh told police he had come to know how drugs could be obtained online by accessing websites concerned through particular web browsers, police said.

Further interrogation revealed that there are sites in the ‘deep net’ where the drugs are available and the payments were being made in ‘Bitcoins’.

"The matter will be taken up with the Narcotics Control Bureau and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to ensure that such transactions are curbed," the DCP said.

What is the deep web / deep net?

The deep web / deep net also referred to as the invisible web or hidden web refers to anything that cannot be located using a search engine or will not show up in the search results.

Your online bank statements, emails in Gmail account, office intranet are all examples of the deep web.

The deep web also stores masses of raw data which could be government resources or in the form of databases that can be used for one’s own research.

The dark net or dark web is an extension of the deep web in that not only can you not access it through a search engine but you cannot access it through a regular web browser either.

The dark web is home to anonymously hosted websites that deal largely in illicit activities.
