Planning a trip to Kerala but don’t know where to turn for travel tips and critical information? The tourism department of Kerala has kicked off a new initiative to make all this and more available at the cost of just a few WhatsApp messages.

In an attempt to woo tourists to Kerala during the off-season that lasts till September, the tourism department has introduced Maya, a virtual tour guide accessible through WhatsApp to answer any and all queries about tourism in Kerala.

All tourists have to do is add Maya (9048090481) to a WhatsApp group, and fire away with any questions they have about travelling and staying in Kerala.

The Kerala Tourism department has previously been active across other social media platforms, and its WhatsApp debut makes it the first tourism board in the country to foray into the medium of instant messaging.

“The initiative was launched keeping in mind the dull season. We want to attract as many tourists as possible, especially the domestic tourists. WhatsApp provides a platform for continued interaction and as a result, we have been getting good responses from people,” said an official who has been working closely with the initiative.

Explaining the rationale behind adding ‘Maya’ to a WhatsApp group, he says, “These days whenever you plan a trip, the first thing you do is create a WhatsApp group. So if you add our virtual guide Maya to the group, she can assist you in planning out the trip.”

The initiative has garnered much interest from users, receiving the maximum number of responses from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in India, as well as from various countries in Europe.
