If you are considering switching over to a BSNL number based on posts on Facebook about their incredible 3G data offer, it’s time to hold your horses. Numerous posts claiming that BSNL has announced an unprecedented offer of 20 GB of 3G data for a miniscule amount of Rs 50 have been going viral on Facebook and other social media for more than a day.

According to articles cited from various websites in these posts, this unprecedented offer is being made under a scheme subsidised by the Government of India as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India initiative.

However, BSNL has now confirmed that it is not offering any such data pack. In a statement given to Digit, Sanjay Kumar, GM, Sales and Marketing, BSNL said that even they do not know where the reports were coming from. “We also don’t know where this story is originating from. As of now, we don’t have any such plans,” he said.

The twitter page of Digital India does not mention anything about such a plan subsidized by the Government of India either.

The social media posts had claimed that to avail the benefits of the scheme, all BSNL users had to do was log on to the BSNL mobile safe care portal and fill out an application. The said form would also ask for four other numbers with which the data could be shared.
