Two weeks after her latest hearing at the district court premises in Srivilliputhur, Nirmala Devi has been admitted to a psychiatric centre in Tirunelveli. The former Devanga College of Arts professor is accused of luring students to provide sexual favours, allegedly for unnamed higher officials in Madurai Kamaraj University.

Nirmala Devi, whose audio clips where she attempted to lure female students went viral in April last year, leading to a detailed probe into the case currently being conducted by the CB-CID, was granted bail in March this year. When she appeared for a hearing at the district court premises in Srivilliputhur earlier this month, her behaviour was out of normal, according to reports. She was reportedly seen roaming around the court premises claiming she had been acquitted, following which she began meditating and praying. According to TNIE, she also poured tea and soft drink on her mobile phone.

The Aruppukottai town inspector Balamurugan told TNM that she had been behaving oddly, as reported by neighbours, for a few weeks now.

Her lawyer Pasumpon Pandian told TNM that she has sought help for her mental health and is currently undergoing treatment. He further alleged that she had faced custodial torture while she was in prison, leading to her current mental health issues.

"She has faced immense custodial torture while lodged in prison. She was forced to say things that were untrue in her confession statement. The mental torture is the reason for her condition now," he said, "Even when she came for her hearing, she was not allowed to tell the truth to the media. It has been a huge mental burden on her because the police is trying to protect some powerful men.”

He further alleged, "Her family has been threatened against supporting her. With no help from any quarter, she has been facing all these problems by herself."
