The National Investigation Agency on Saturday filed a chargesheet against two Tamil Nadu natives who were arrested for allegedly recruiting persons and propagating the ideology of the Islamic State.

The chargesheet was filed against 33-year-old Mohammed Azarudeen H and 38-year-old Shiek Hidayathullah Y at the NIA Special Court in Ernakulam. The duo are residents of Coimbatore in TN and were nabbed by NIA officials in June.

The accused allegedly propagated the ideology of the Islamic State terrorist outfit on social media “with intention to recruit vulnerable youth into ISIS for carrying out terrorist attacks in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.” First accused Mohammed Azarudeen and third accused Shiek Hidayathullah Y have been charged under Section 120B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code read with Section 39 (Offence relating to support given to terrorist organisation) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

NIA initially registered the case against six persons in Coimbatore last May. According to the official statement of NIA, the case was registered based on credible information that the accused persons and their associates have been propagating the ideology of ISIS to recruit youth to carry out terror strikes.

“After registration of the case, searches were conducted on June 12, 2019 at the residence of the six accused persons in Coimbatore and based on the incriminating facts revealed, Mohammed Azarudeen and Shiek Hidayathullah Y was arrested,” NIA states.

The NIA has also found that Mohammed Azarudeen and Shiek Hidayathullah Y have been allegedly propagating the violent extremist ideology of ISIS since 2017, with the intention of recruiting associates in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. “They organised several secret classes at their houses, besides other places in Coimbatore, in support of ISIS,” the NIA stated.

They have been also accused of allegedly following Zahran Hashim, a suicide bomber and alleged mastermind of the Sri Lanka Easter terror attack, on social media. The accused persons allegedly downloaded and propagated Zahran Hashim’s speeches in support of ISIS.
