NGT seeks explanation from centre over biodiversity loss in the Ganga

The National Green Tribunal has issued a notice to the central government asking it to respond to a petition that is seeking compensation for biodiversity loss in the Ganga river.
According to a report in Hindustan Times environmental activists have sought compensation for the loss of biodiversity due to excessive withdrawal of water from the Ganga by the Farakka Barrage Project.
The petitioners claimed that the fish population got degraded owing to the project.
