A YSR Congress leader Narayan Reddy and his aide Sambasividu were brutally hacked to death by members of a rival faction on Sunday.

The murders were well planned and the killers had watched Narayana Reddy’s movements for 15 days before executing the kill, Karnool SP A Ravikrishna said.

“Three tractors were used for the murders and around 15 people were involved in it. On the way from Cherukulaparu to Ramakrishnapuram, there are a few boulders where 10 people were hiding in wait for Narayana Reddy to appear. In a farm located next to the road, five others were hiding. After Reddy crossed the spot where the 15 men were hiding, he passed by another farm, where work was being carried out with the help of a tractor,” the SP said.

After Reddy crossed the farm, they saw a few men on a tractor who appeared to be carrying out road repairs. It was at this point that a tractor slammed into Reddy’s car from behind. Another car smashed into the side, where Reddy was seated, rendering it impossible for him to escape, Narayana Reddy’s driver, Ellappa told TNM.

“Suddenly a mob of people wielding stones, machetes, knifes and sickles descended up on us. They began hurling rocks at the car. At some point, one of them opened my door and told me to either run away or get killed. I just ran as fast as I could but I could hear Reddy screaming as they hacked him up,” Ellappa said.

While Reddy was murdered in his car, Sambasivudu was chased down and brutally murdered. Ellappa says that he recognises two of the men who attacked Narayana Reddy.

“One of them was a man named Ramanjaneyulu and another was Rama Naidu. Four of them were not wearing masks while the others were. I do not know the names of the other two men but I can identify them if I see their picture,” Ellappa added.

According to the SP, a murder case has been filed against Deputy Chief Minister KE Krishnamurthy and 13 others after Narayana Reddy’s wife Sridevi and his brother Pradeep filed a complaint with the police.

With Narayana Reddy’s murder taking on a political turn, YSRC leaders called for a bandh in Karnool district and took to the streets while flinging allegations on Deputy Chief Minister KE Krishnamurthy and Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu, claiming that they were involved in killing the two leaders.

The YSRC leaders also put a stop to the plying of state transport buses in the region and shopping malls and shops were closed.

Kurnool police, however, took the leaders into custody as they had not obtained permission for either the protest, or the bandh.

Lashing out at the ruling party, YSR Congress President, Jagan Mohan Reddy, said that the TDP had targeted Narayana Reddy as he was against the illegal sand mining, which was being conducted in the area by the TDP members.

“Narayana Reddy had always opposed the sand mafia backed by the TDP members. A few months ago, he had informed the police that his life was under threat and had appealed to them many times to renew his gun licence. The police colluded with TDP members and put his request on hold,” Jagan Reddy told media persons.
