Twelve days after she set herself on fire, a minor girl from Mysuru district succumbed to her injuries in a private hospital on Wednesday morning.

Nithya*, a resident of Bilikere village in Hunsur taluk, set herself on fire in her house on September 2. According to the complaint filed by her parents, she was being harassed by a minor boy.

Mysuru SP, Ravi Channannavar told The News Minute that the accused is in police custody and will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board on Wednesdayevening.

Ravi said that some contradictory information had emerged in the preliminary investigation, and the exact reason for the girl’s suicide could only be confirmed after further investigation.

“The girl had poured kerosene on herself in her house and set herself on fire. The next day, on September 3 a complaint of harassment was filed against the accused by the parents,” he said.

However, “While, the girl’s parents allege that the boy was harassing their daughter, Nithya’s friends say that she was in love with the boy and her parents did not approve of the relationship as he was not of the same caste. Only further investigation will show what led to her death,” he said.

Ravi added that a case of abetment of suicide has been booked against the minor boy following the girl’s death.
