Four days after the murder of a security guard in the Kodanadu estate of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa was reported, reports say that the police have identified a Kerala-based gang as the criminals responsible for the murder of the guard.

A report on Puthiya Thalaimurai states that the police have identified the killers, and that at least one person from the gang has been apprehended. He is reported to be speaking Malayalam. There is however no independent verification of the detention.

Earlier, TOI reported that a special team of the Nilgiris district police had gone to Chennai to detain more than five people for interrogation in connection with the murder.

“A sports utility vehicle with AIADMK flag was parked to disturb traffic at Kotagiri in Nilgiris district on April 23 afternoon. A police constable asked the driver to park the SUV in some other place, but the party people began arguing with the police constable. Police officers instructed one of the five special teams to trace the SUV and more than five people who were in the vehicle. The special team tracked the vehicle details and the SUV was traced to Chennai. The team has rushed to Chennai to detain the five people in connection with the murder,” an officer told TOI.

Media reports now state that following the investigation by the police, it has emerged that fake number plates and gloves were found near Kotagiri. Police then traced the gang using available information, suspecting that it was a well-planned crime.

51-year-old Om Bahadur, a guard at the high-profile Kodanadu tea estate which belonged to the late Chief Minister, was found murdered on a private road inside the estate in the wee hours of Monday.  Another guard, Krishna Bahadur, was also found injured at the spot, and he seemed to have been tied and beaten up.

The dead watchman was found near Gate No. 9 of the estate, which has several entrances and exits. A group of unknown persons had allegedly came in a car and hacked him to death, injuring the other guard. Police were investigating to see if it's a case of a robbery attempt.
