A 53-year-old murder accused died under mysterious circumstances when he was being escorted for spot inspection to the scene of the crime that he had committed in Ramamurthy Nagar in Bengaluru, on Monday. Krishnamurthy Naidu, a lift operator who has worked with the Madras Engineering Group (MEG), was being taken towards the spot in Kalkere where he is said to have disposed of the murder weapon used to slit his wife Mekala Devi's throat on November 20.
According to the police, on the way to the spot, Krishnamurthy complained of chest pain. He was rushed a hospital nearby, where he was declared brought dead. “He complained of chest pain and was shifted to Koshy’s Hospital, where he died,” said Rahul Kumar Shahapurwade, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Division speaking to Deccan Herald.
Initially, Krishnamurthy was a complainant in the case since he had alerted the police of the murder. However, upon investigation, the police suspected that Krishnamurthy had manipulated the scene of the crime and also found that he had left his workplace at 10.30 am without any explanation, on the day of his wife’s death, as per the Times of India.
The couple married 20 years ago and constantly had fights. During one such fight, Krishnamurthy attacked his wife with a knife in a fit of rage. He later told the police officials that he had buried the knife used to kill his wife in a pit near a lake.
Her body was found at her residence at Abbaiah Reddy Layout in Ramamurthy Nagar.
“Krishnamurthy’s body has been shifted to Bowring Hospital's mortuary. Senior officers who visited the spot have transferred the case to the CID for further investigation,” an investigating officer told Bangalore Mirror.
The CID will now probe the death of Krishnamurthy since it was a case of custodial death. The case has been registered at Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station.
