It appears that Mohanlal will be playing the Prime Minister in the new Suriya film, Kaappaan. If reports doing rounds on social media are to be believed, Mohanlal will be playing Chandrakanth Varma, sporting a Modi-like beard, kurta and jacket, but with thicker hair that’s more salt and pepper than purely grey.

Directed by KV Anand, the film’s title was announced only this New Year, with a poster showing Suriya, Mohanlal and Arya on it. Touted to be a mega-budget entertainer, the film has an impressive line-up of stars like Sayyeshaa (who will be playing the female lead), Boman Irani, and Samuthirakani.

The film has been scripted jointly by director KV Anand and veteran writer Pattukottai Prabhakar. In the film, Suriya is rumoured to be playing a bodyguard to Mohanlal’s character.

Anand had taken to Twitter to run a poll with three title options and asked fans to participate and pick the best title. The three options mentioned were MeetpaanKaappaan and Uirka. Anand also revealed that Kaanjagan is the fourth title option while replying to a fan’s tweet. Uirka had won the poll with a maximum percentage of votes. Before the title was announced, the movie was referred to as Suriya 37, it being the 37th film of the actor.

Suriya has already completed shooting his portion for the film. However, the makers are yet to finish the last schedule which will be shot in Chennai soon.

The film had originally cast Telugu actor Allu Sirish in a crucial role. But he later chose to exit from the project and revealed the reason via a statement. Arya was eventually signed on to replace Sirish and the grapevine is that the former plays a negative role.

Kaappaan will have Harris Jayaraj composing the tunes, cinematographer Abhinandan Ramanujam behind the camera and Anthony editing it. Lyca Productions is producing the film.
