The Penamaluru police in Vijayawada were in for a shock on Sunday after they found a mentally unsound man next to his father's decomposing body, after breaking into a house on a complaint of 'foul smell' from the neighbours.

The police suspect that the man had died a few days ago at his residence in Kanuru in Shiridi Nagar and his son was just staying next to the body.

The deceased was identified as 70-year-old Konduru Koteswara Rao, a retired employee of the Dr Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station in Vijayawada.

According to media reports, Rao’s wife had died a few years ago and he was taking case of his son.

The police immediately shifted the rotting body to the Government General Hospital (GGH) for a post-mortem.

The police said that they did not suspect the 30-year-old son to be involved in his father's death, as a preliminary report from the autopsy showed no external injuries on the body, with doctors at the GGH saying that it could be a natural death.

“Initially, we suspected that the son killed Koteswara Rao, but the autopsy report clarified that it was a natural death and there were no external injuries on the body. Koteswara Rao was suffering from heart-related ailments and he might have died a natural death,” Penamaluru circle inspector K Damodhar told a media outlet.

The police also said that the son believed that Rao was just sleeping and he was seen performing rituals to 'wake him up'.

Relatives of the deceased were also informed and the body was handed over to them.

In October last year, a similar incident was reported in Hyderabad after a 70-year-old man’s decomposed body was found in his daughter’s apartment in Hyderabad. The body had reportedly been rotting at least for a month.

Since all the doors and windows were closed, other residents in the building did not get any foul smell.
