To honour the memory of the seven-year-old Idukki boy who died after being attacked by his mother’s partner, the district police co-operative society has opened a children’s library at the Kumaramangalam Government LP School. The boy was a Class 2 student at the school, located near Thodupuzha.

Talking to TNM, Idukki district police co-operative society secretary Sanal Chakarpani said, “Every year our co-operative society distributes notebooks and other goods to the school. This year we decided to set up a children’s library as a memorial to the little boy.”

Sanal continued, “For this library initiative, the police co-operative society has bought Rs 20,000 worth of new books from the state library council book fair. The library has over 400 books. We have tried to include all types books in the library.”

“If the boy had been alive, he would have joined Class 3 this academic year. We hope the children’s library will be an excellent memorial to the kid and keep his memories evergreen at his school,” Sanal said.

On Friday, Idukki district police chief KB Venugopal inaugurated the library. Kumaramangalam Government LP School headmaster Bijoy John and Idukki district police co-operative society president Joseph Kurian attended the function.

On April 6, the 7-year-old boy, who was the victim of a crime which rattled Kerala, breathed his last. He was brutally beaten up by his mother’s partner, a 36-year-old man named Arun Anand, with the knowledge of his mother. The accused had been cohabiting with the mother. The couple brought the barely breathing child to a private hospital in Idukki, on March 28. They lied to the doctors about his injuries and delayed treatment to the child by refusing to let the doctors do a CT scan to ascertain the level of damage. He was shifted to the Kolenchery Medical College Hospital where he battled for over a week on life support before passing away.

During investigations, it was also discovered that the accused had been sexually abusing the victim’s 3.5-year-old younger brother, whose permanent protection is now being sought by the paternal grandparents. The police slapped a POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) case against the accused. While Arun continues in judicial custody, the mother was also arrested for suppressing facts and later got bail.

On May 6, the CWC had handed over the protection of the 3.5-year-old boy to the parental grandparents for a period of one month. After one month, the paternal grandparents approached the Thiruvananthapuram family court to get full-time protection of the boy. The family court sent a notice to the Idukki Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in this regard. Now the case is under the consideration of the Idukki family court.
