Objecting to the NDA government's draft National Education Policy (NEP), MDMK founder Vaiko today accused the Centre of making an effort to "impose Hindutva" on the masses and accord legal recognition to Hindi and Sanskrit.

"The draft of the NEP has (provisions such as) providing legal recognition to Hindi and Sanskrit by imposing Hindutva opinions," he said.

These were "against the pluralism of the country," Vaiko said in a statement in Chennai.

The draft policy was actually "regressive" and it attempted at 'snatching away' the states' rights as it proposed uniform syllabus across the country, he alleged.

The proposal to allow foreign universities amounted to "commercialisation" of the country's education sector, he said, adding this "denies the social justice of reservation ensured by the Constitution."

Amidst a nationwide debate on the draft NEP, he said his party, a former NDA constituent, will stage a protest against this on August 27 here.
