The two superstars, Rajinikanth and Mammootty, from the Tamil and Malayalam film industries respectively, starred in the film Thalapathy way back in 1991.

The cult hit that was directed by Mani Ratnam was a blockbuster in both Tamil Nadu as well as Kerala. In fact, keeping in mind the star status and huge fan following that both the stars enjoyed, Mani Ratnam worked on two different climaxes to suit their sensibilities. Thalapathy had a big star cast including Arvind Swamy, Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, Shobana and Geetha.

After 25 years now, there are talks of Rajinikanth and Mammootty being roped in again by the maverick director. Reports have it that Mani Ratnam has a script ready that would befit the stalwarts and discussions are on. It is believed that the film may be out as a 2018 release with the possibility of the shooting beginning very soon. However, there is no official word yet from either the director or the stars.

In the meantime, Rajinikanth has just completed the Shankar directorial 2.O and the film is into the post production mode. With a lot of graphic work involved, 2.O will be out for release in early 2018. Further, the Superstar is getting ready to join the sets of the Pa Ranjith directorial which has not been titled yet. This film is likely to start rolling later this month. Generally, Rajinikanth works in one film at a time, but now, he may do two projects concurrently, say sources.

Mammootty, on the other hand, is busy with the Ajai Vasudev directorial which has Unni Mukundan, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar, Mukesh Nambiar, Salim Kumar, Maqbool Salmaan, Kailash, Poonam Bajwa and Kalabhavan Shajon in the star cast.

If Mani Ratnam manages to pull off this casting coup once again, it is going to be a treat for the fans.
