Mammootty’s third film of the year, Pullikaran Staraa hit the theatres on Friday amidst a lot of expectations. Being an Onam release, the makers are confident of cashing in on the long weekend. Mammootty’s fans are excited about this film as it will have their idol playing a teacher-trainer, a role that he has never done before. Yes, a teacher or a professor but for the first time, he will be seen as a teacher who teaches wannabe teachers.

Directed by 7th Day fame Shyam Dhar, the film has been penned by Ratheesh Ravi. B Rakesh has bankrolled this venture under his banner Universal Cinema. Starring Mammootty in the lead role and Asha Sharath as his onscreen pair, the film also has Deepti Sati, Innocent, Dileesh Pothan and Hareesh Perumanna in the star cast. It may be noted that Mammootty and Innocent are teaming up after a gap of seven years.

According to sources, Pullikaran Staraa is a film about a teacher’s trainer from Idukki arriving at Kochi to teach a set of aspiring teachers and how a small incident goes on to change their lives for ever.

Scoring the music for this film is M Jayachandran with Vinod Ilampally wielding the camera and Ranjan Abraham in charge of the editing cuts. Mammootty has had two film releases this year. While his first film release The Great Father went on to fetch positive reviews and did well at the box office, the second release Puthan Panam did not do as well as expected and turned out to be a box office dud.

Speaking to The Hindu about directing Mammootty, the young director said, “Just imagine, he was a super star in 1986, the year I was born. He is a legend I grew up with. I was in awe of him and was terribly nervous when I went to narrate the story to him along with scenarist Ratheesh Ravi. But, contrary to all the rumours I had heard about him being short tempered and taciturn, he was extremely patient and cooperative with newcomers like us.”
