Actress Malavika Mohanan, daughter of renowned cinematographer TU Mohanan, makes her Tamil debut opposite superstar Rajinikanth in Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta. Impressed with her work in Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds, in which she played a girl from Dhobi Ghat, Karthik is said to have signed her up for his film.

In her interview to Times of India, Malavika has revealed that she’s really excited to have worked with Rajinikanth so early on in her career. “I am very excited to be working with Rajini sir at such an early stage in my career. He is an absolute delight to work… so humble and down to earth,” she was quoted saying.

It is rumoured that Malavika plays Rajinikanth’s pair in the film. She shot for her portion in Darjeeling and Varanasi. Without revealing if she’s actually paired with the superstar, she said: “It’s a very challenging role performance wise and it was even tougher for me because I don’t speak Tamil. I hired a language teacher and trained with her.”

The film also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Simran, Trisha, Megha Akash, Sasikumar and Bobby Simhaa among others. The shoot for the film was wrapped up last week and going by the buzz in the trade, it might hit the screens for Pongal next year.

Petta marks Subbaraj’s first-time collaboration with Rajinikanth. On teaming up with the 67-year-old star, Subbaraj had said he sees it as a fascinating opportunity to make his dream come true.

The film is being bankrolled by Sun Pictures on a lavish budget. The title and motion poster of the film was released last month amid very high expectations and was received by the mixed response. The entire motion poster – featuring Rajinikanth turning and walking in slow motion – unfolds inside a church.
