Locals rescue newborn abandoned near Andhra highway after noticing dog dragging her

The baby, who is underweight, has been admitted in the ICU of the Kakinada government hospital.

A newborn girl, who had been left in some bushes, along a highway was rescued by locals while being dragged across the road by a dog on the outskirts of Kakinada town in Andhra Pradesh. The baby was found around 10 30 am on Wednesday near the Chollangi bridge, adjacent to National Highway 216, in East Godavari district. After alerting the Korangi police, residents moved the newborn to the Kakinada Government General Hospital, where she is presently admitted in the Intensive Care Unit.

According to police, the baby was found to be less than a day old. While she did suffer some scratches and bites from the dog picking her up and dragging her, police said that the baby had suffered more injuries from the sharp stones and other particles on the ground near the bushes. While the wounds are being treated, Korangi Sub-Inspector Satish said that the bigger threat to the newborn’s life right now is being underweight. “Right now, she weighs around 1 kg, which is much lesser than the healthy, normal weight for a newborn. She is under the care of doctors for now. Her situation hasn’t improved much since she was found,” Satish said. He also added that the baby was not discovered sooner as she had not been crying or making any noises. Locals only noticed her once the dog picked up and dragged her.

Police have registered a case under IPC Section 317, which applies to cases of exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years of age by a parent or guardian. The SI said that police are inquiring with ASHA workers, ANMs and local hospitals to find information about women who might have delivered a baby around the time she was found, in order to trace the newborn’s parents. He added that in the event that the parents cannot be traced, the District Women Development and Child Welfare Department would take care of the baby.
