The Met Department has predicted light rain for Tamil Nadu and its capital Chennai over the weekend. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some parts of the city over Friday and Saturday. A statement from the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre in the city also predicted rains for other districts in the state.

Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Tiruchirapalli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Kanchipuram and Villupuram districts will likely experience light to moderate rain along with Puducherry at a few places.

Light to moderate rain has also been predicted for parts of the state and Puducherry between Sunday and Tuesday.

The India Meteorological Department also said that rain and thundershowers were observed on Friday in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Meanwhile, city-based weather blogger Pradeep John, who runs the popular Facebook page Tamil Nadu Weatherman, pointed to intense storms over North Chennai on Thursday. "It's already mature and winds are from North west. It should not flank too much and go too down. Let's wait and See. Most of the storms in interiors are flanking a lot," (sic) he had posted on his Facebook page.

However, according to one report in the Times of India, mild rains occurred only in a few areas. This also meant that the day time temperature also rose because of lack of cloud cover.

Speaking to the newspaper, an official from the Met Department said that the city may get clement rain owing to 'convective action' which is brought for the due to high day time temperatures. The official reportedly said, “There is a chance of rain at evenings and nights. There are no other factors that can bring rain like upper air circulation which was the reason for rain a few days ago. Similar will be the situation on Saturday and Sunday evenings or night. If at all it is going to rain it is because of clouds caused by convective action.”
