The release of actor Rajinikanth’s upcoming film, which is a highly anticipated science-fiction action flick titled 2.0, was postponed to April 2018 last week, from its original plan of releasing in January.

While the makers did not elaborate on the reason behind the postponement, reports have surfaced, that suggest that the release date was pushed, because the special effects and VFX required for the project are taking a long time.

The VFX is being done by an Oscar award-winning American VFX studio team which has a team comprising of John Hughes and Walt, who have done the VFX for films like Life of Pi, 300 and Percy Jackson.

According to reports, the team has failed to complete the special effects in the stipulated time as promised, which led to the film's postponement from January to April.

Following this, further reports surfaced, which claimed that the company had taken 90% of the payment in advance and failed to meet the deadline, and the makers Lyca Productions are planning to take legal action against the VFX company for not fulfilling their contractual obligations.

However, makers have dismissed these reports as rumours, and said that they were not planning to take any legal action against the company.

Speaking to Firstpost, the makers said, "It's true that we are facing significant challenges on the VFX front. But, the VFX company is not solely responsible for the delay. You have to understand that 2.0 is Asia's most prominent project and we have to make sure we deliver a world-class film. In fact, the VFX studio in question is very much part of the movie, and working round the clock to meet our deadline".

2.0 is a magnum opus that has a bevy of stars including Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson in the cast. Directed by Shankar, the film has the Oscar winning music director AR Rahman composing the tunes.

The film’s audio was launched in a grand manner last month in Dubai.

2.0 will mark the return of Rajinikanth as Dr Vaseegaran and Chitti. Made on a lavish budget of Rs. 450 crore, the film will also be simultaneously released in Hindi and Telugu.
