Lead found within permissible limits in Karnataka, yet banned

Health Minister U T Khader announced that the manufacturing and sale of Maggi noodles in Karnataka has been banned temporarily as per the directives of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). It has also directed Nestle to withdraw its stock from all stores across the state with immediate effect, failing which, the Health department will book cases against stores selling the product, reported Deccan Herald. The Health department had recently ordered tests of Maggi noodles and the results have shown that the lead content is below the permissible limits, the minister said. â€śKarnataka will effect a complete ban on MaggiÂ only after it gets a final report from the Central Food Laboratory in Kolkata,â€ť he was quoted as saying. The department is also awaiting the laboratory reports to ascertain the presence of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) in Maggi which is expected on Monday. If the report indicates that the product is harmful for consumption, the state will ban Maggi noodles, the report added. The minister also criticised Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru for refusing to test Maggi samples citing rules. Other noodle products like Top Ramen, Knorr, Yippee!, Sunfeast, 1to3, Surya, Chings will also be sent for testing, he added. Â
