After the Communist Party of India (Marxist) suffered a huge loss in the state, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said it was an unexpected result. Reacting to the poor performance of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he said, “It was not expected and we will be examining the reasons that led to this.” The LDF has lost 19 out of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state to the UDF.

Kerala has always voted against the party that ruled at the Centre, which in this case would mean more votes for the Congress-led United Democratic Front in the state. “Earlier, such a trend was seen against the Congress party in the state for general elections (at the time they ruled at the Centre),” it read.

He further said that there was a strong sentiment in Kerala, against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s rule at the Centre, and it is the LDF’s campaigns and interferences that led to it.

“It is as a result of this that the people’s verdict came against the BJP in Kerala. It is the LDF’s political stances that led to the BJP not winning a single seat in Kerala. However, the opposition to the BJP government at the Centre had come in favour of the Congress party in the state,” he said in a note to the media.

The CPI(M), which leads the LDF in the state, had also had a dismal performance at the national level. The CPI(M)’s Polit Bureau has issued a statement thanking its candidates as well as the people who voted for these candidates.

“The Indian electorate has given a decisive verdict in favour of the BJP and its allies. The CPI(M) has suffered a severe setback in these elections. We shall introspect the reasons for this and draw proper lessons for the future,” read the statement from the CPI(M) Central Committee office.

“There are huge challenges ahead regarding the defence of our secular democratic republic, the institutions of Constitutional authority, people’s rights and livelihood issues. The Polit Bureau calls upon the people to safeguard harmony to unitedly come forward to meet these challenges in future,” it said.
